Alexander McQueen: A tribute & my favourite moments in pictures

So many tributes and heartfelt words are flooding in from all over the world regarding the sad loss of a breathtakingly brilliant designer.  Lee McQueen was known throughout the fashion industry as “the hooligan of fashion” for his anti establishment and non conformist attitude.  However there was no denying his natural talent from the age of 3 he was drawing and at 12 he knew he wanted to be a fashion designer.  It was down to his beloved mother who arranged for him to fulfil an apprenticeship at Savile Row who were at the time looking for new talent in tailoring.

He soon moved on to study design at Central Saint Martin’s, after showing his final collection it was obvious that he was a thought provoking innovative designer and this didn’t go unnoticed by fashion talent scout and guru Isabella Blow who was so impressed with his work that she bought his entire collection for £5000.

Consequently the fashion power house Givenchy appointed him as head designer succeeding John Galliano and his debut show didn’t disappoint.  Models stalked the catwalk while machines sprayed them with bright coloured paint as they held their arms up in mock horror.  His shows were expressions of deep passion and often disturbing, yet always dramatic.

In typical McQueen style he began to alienate his French employers which resulted in the Gucci Group offering him his own label.  Here they understood and accepted his bad boy behaviour and McQueen delivered collections that further increased his popularity, respect and talent.

Lee Alexander McQueen was named the British Designer of the year 4 times and was awarded a CBE.  As a young designer I followed his work with great enthusiasm and eagerness that no other designer has or will recreate with young aspiring creative’s again.  He was an innovator who combined cutting edge technical design with natural influence that always reached into your emotions good or bad.  He will be sadly missed, a British icon lost but never forgotten his work will live on.
